Volunteer – Cochrane and Area Victim Services

Volunteer

About Us

“Empowering Victims and Restoring Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow”

Volunteer

Cochrane Victim Services utilizes a team of compassionate and dedicated volunteer victim advocates to provide on-call crisis response in partnership and when called upon by the RCMP.

Cochrane Victim Services is the only organization that fills this need in the community.

This volunteer opportunity requires a special level of commitment.  Volunteers must be willing and able to attend all mandatory training, pass an enhanced RCMP security clearance and commit to the time required of a volunteer victim advocate.

How You Can Help

On-Call Crisis Response

The commitment of volunteer advocates is to respond to a crisis when called upon by RCMP. The role of an advocate when responding to a crisis call-out is to ensure the emotional and physical needs of a victim are met in a time of crisis. Providing these types of supports during critical moments can be crucial to the healthy recovery and forward movement of an individual who has been struck by crime or trauma.

Training

Advocates are required to complete a mandated training course offered online by the Alberta Solicitor Generals’ office before advocacy on-call work can begin.  Other training opportunities include conferences and monthly training offered by community professionals.

Court Support Program

The purpose of the Court Support Program is to provide guidance and information on the criminal court process and ensure victims and witnesses are supported throughout the course of the Criminal Justice Process.

The role of a Court Support advocate is to provide emotional support and information on the rights of victims. The Criminal Justice System can be overwhelming and frustrating for victims.  This program aims to mitigate these effects by accompanying victims and witnesses to court and ensuring that the Victims of Crime Protocols are in place.

Community Awareness

Volunteer victim advocates are afforded opportunities to participate in a number of local events as representatives of Cochrane Victim Services.  Community awareness opportunities include trade fairs, awareness campaigns, and community functions.
